UC San Diego Health is improving health outcomes after implanting a first-in-the-region dual chamber, leadless pacemaker.
Patients living with irregular heart rhythms, or arrhythmias, often need a pacemaker to help regulate their heartbeat. In fact, “nearly 80% of patients who receive a pacemaker need a dual chamber option,” says UC San Diego Health. The new pacemaker system is a big step forward for patients that can now receive the pacemaker through a catheter that implants directly into the heart. In addition, “the new system, the size of a AAA battery, does not require a surgical ‘pocket’ under the skin” since it’s leadless, UC San Diego Health says.
