5 Things To Know: JFS Issues Important Notice about Grave Disability Form Usage

The Jewish Family Service (JFS) Patient Advocacy Team sent a critical reminder that the expanded definition of “grave disability” will not be implemented in San Diego County until Jan. 1, 2025. The new forms are already available on the Department of Health Care Services website. However, for individuals in San Diego County, if the new forms are utilized before Jan. 1, 2025, it could be deemed as an unlawful detainment and result in the individual’s release. Law enforcement and/or any other individual authorized to detain individuals pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code Sections 5150, 5250, and 5270 should use the following current forms for 5150, 5250, and 5270 holds through Dec. 31. Please contact JFS for further information and/or for specialized training about changes to the legal definition of “grave disability,” pursuant to Senate Bill 43.
