IMPERIAL COUNTY: Larry Lewis, who has been Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District CEO since 2012, has been hired to lead the Imperial County Local Health Authority. The announcement was made at the commission meeting on Oct. 10. He will assume responsibilities with the health authority on Nov. 14. We thank Larry for his years of service on the HASD&IC board and for his leadership at Pioneers to enhance the health and well-being of Imperial County communities. We wish him the best in his next endeavor and look forward to working with him in his new role.

HASD&IC BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING SUMMARY 

The HASD&IC Board of Directors convened on Sept. 21. Board Chair Tom Gammiere, Corporate SVP/Regional Chief Executive – South, Scripps Health, officiated. 

Special guests Mayor Todd Gloria and San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher met with the board and engaged in update and discussion of our region’s overall health needs and the following important issues: people experiencing homelessness, housing/shelter, behavioral health, CARE Courts, conservatorship, Medi-Cal Managed Care, CalAIM, and workforce needs. Gloria and Fletcher emphasized their commitment for city and county to work collaboratively to address these issues and offered their support in state legislative advocacy efforts.

5 Things To Know: HASD&IC Education Opportunity, Public Charge Final Rule, CDPH Leadership Updates, Telehealth Equity, Health Careers Grants

HASD&IC EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY: The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) will join HASD&IC for a webinar on Oct. 20 from 10 to 11 a.m. (PT) on the Hospital Presumptive Eligibility Program and the COVID-19 Uninsured Group Program. DHCS will provide an overview of both programs and share common mistakes made by providers that cause delays in benefits. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the presentation. Because we would like to give DHCS time to review your questions in advance and respond during the Q&A session, please submit your questions by Oct. 14. Advance registration is requested.

5 Things To Know: Medi-Cal Managed Care Contract Appeals, HQI Annual Conference, Behavioral Health, New Homeless Shelter, and Medical Device Vulnerability

MEDI-CAL MANAGED CARE CONTRACT APPEALS: Aetna Better Health of California, Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan, Community Health Group, and Centene Corporation have all appealed the Department of Health Care Services’ notice of intent to award Medi-Cal Managed Care contracts in San Diego County. Health Net — owned by Centene — was awarded contracts in a number of counties, it is protesting its absence from Los Angeles County. In its appeal, Health Net contends that its historical presence and work providing Medi-Cal in the region merits its continued provision of managed care in the county.
