As we conclude 2024, it’s time to reflect on the strides our hospitals have made in serving San Diego and Imperial counties. This year has underscored yet again the indispensable role hospitals play in fostering healthier, more resilient communities.
A significant achievement that will pay dividends into the future was completing the engagement and data gathering process for the next Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The process was guided by a commitment to listening, understanding, and uplifting community voices — and this comprehensive evaluation has provided insights into the health challenges our community members face, enabling us to align our service more closely with community needs. Notably, previous CHNAs have brought critical issues like food insecurity and homelessness to the forefront, allowing us to address them proactively. The full CHNA report will be released in the spring, but look for more information on CHNA findings in the coming weeks and months.
In behavioral health, Senate Bill 43 (Eggman, D-Stockton) marked a transformative development. This legislation broadens the definition of “gravely disabled” to include individuals who are unable to provide for their personal safety or necessary medical care due to severe substance use disorders. This expansion facilitates more compressive care for those in dire need, reflecting our hospitals’ dedication to adapting and extending support to underserved populations.
The ambulance patient offload time (APOT) workgroup, formed this year, showed the power of collaboration. By bringing together hospitals, county officials, local emergency medical services agencies, fire chiefs, and other stakeholders, we have fostered meaningful dialogue and partnership. The APOT challenge has yet to be solved, but our unified approach has laid the groundwork for ongoing improvements in patient care and emergency response.
Perhaps most importantly, our hospitals continue to be that beacon of health, safety, and life-saving care, particularly in times of tragedy. The unprecedented flooding in San Diego this past January tested our resilience. In response, our heath care facilities became sanctuaries for those affected, providing essential medical services and support to displaced residents. This unwavering dedication during emergencies underscores the vital role our hospitals play in safeguarding the community.
As we look ahead, the insights gained and progress achieved this year position us to better serve our communities’ evolving health needs. Extending deep gratitude to our health care professionals, partners, and residents for their support and collaboration. I’m looking forward to building on our success with you in 2025.
Wishing you a safe and healthy new year.
