A New Chapter for Health Care in Imperial County

Last week, the El Centro City Council in Imperial County approved the transfer of El Centro Regional Medical Center (ECRMC) to the Imperial Valley Healthcare District (IVHD) — a landmark step toward a stronger, more unified health system for the region.

This decision is the culmination of extensive work and reflects the vision and leadership of local officials and community stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to secure a sustainable future for hospital care in Imperial Valley. It also reflects something more powerful: the deep commitment of this community to protect and strengthen access to care for all who live and work in Imperial County.

While the transition will unfold over time, the vote marks a turning point. As the city of El Centro noted in its statement, the move ensures local control, regional collaboration, and long-term stability for ECRMC.

HASD&IC is proud to support this effort and grateful to all involved — especially the residents, hospital staff, elected leaders, and health care advocates who have spoken up, leaned in, and stayed engaged every step of the way. This transfer is a testament to how collaboration can unite people with a common goal and bring about meaningful change.

After the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was signed last month — resulting in billions of dollars in Medicaid and Medicare cuts that will be detrimental to California hospital care over the next decade — it has never been more important for hospital and health system leaders to navigate this new terrain together, with the shared purpose of caring for the communities they serve. Hospitals must adapt to reduced funding and fewer resources by, in part, finding innovative ways to continue caring for patients in a constantly shifting health care environment.

HASD&IC looks forward to continued collaboration with hospitals, Imperial and San Diego counties, the region’s public health departments, and other local leaders. Together, in real time, we are building a healthier, more resilient future for the Imperial Valley and other local communities.
