In Hospitals, the Season of Giving Is Year-Round

As 2025 draws to a close, many of us are ready to turn the page — and understandably so, given the challenges this year has brought for patients and the hospitals that care for them.

Yet, in reflecting on the year, what stands out most is not the difficulty, but the resilience. Our hospitals showed resolve in the face of adversity; togetherness with those in our community who were navigating their own challenges; and dedication from our hospital leaders who fought tirelessly for their patients’ needs.

This is not surprising. There is no “pause” button for hospitals’ mission of care, even when conditions are difficult. That spirit of giving — of service, of responsibility and commitment to our communities — isn’t something hospitals bring down from the attic each December. It’s embedded in the work we do year-round, and it produces real, measurable impacts for the people and communities we serve. This year, that commitment translated into meaningful progress including:

  •  Completion of the 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment, which reflects the unique views and experiences of a broad and diverse cross-section of San Diegans
  • Our annual meeting, which fostered information-sharing and relationship-building among hospitals and other health care stakeholders, all in service of caring for our shared communities
  • Increased reimbursement rates for inpatient psychiatric services, benefiting 100% of member hospitals
  • Behavioral Health Environmental Scans for both San Diego and Imperial counties, which will inform future education and advocacy efforts
  • A robust and growing local political action committee, helping ensure that our policymakers understand the challenges facing hospitals

There is no doubt that 2026 will be a year of continued change. While we don’t know yet what the year will bring, one thing is certain: We remain united in our dedication to San Diego and Imperial counties. That unity is our strength, and it will serve us well in the months to come.

As the year winds down, I hope you find a moment to exhale, reflect, and prepare for what’s next. We look forward to seeing you in January.
