North County Partnerships Strengthen Access to Care

July 1 marked an important moment for health care in San Diego County as two significant partnerships officially took effect in North County, bringing together Tri-City Medical Center and Sharp HealthCare in Oceanside and Palomar Health and UC San Diego Health in Escondido and Poway.

While the structures of their partnerships differ, they share a common goal of ensuring that these communities continue to have access to high-quality care in an increasingly challenging health care environment. Rising costs, workforce shortages, and growing demand for specialized services have made it more difficult for many hospitals to operate independently. Strategic partnerships like these can provide the resources, expertise, and long-term stability needed to meet those challenges.

The overwhelming approval of Tri-City’s partnership with Sharp HealthCare by nearly 93% of voters underscores an important reality: Communities recognize the need for innovative approaches to sustaining and expanding health care services. As financial and operational pressures continue to challenge hospitals in our region and across California, collaboration can offer a pathway to preserving local access to care while creating new opportunities for investment and growth.

This trend also extends into Imperial County, where the Imperial Valley Healthcare District is in the final stages of acquiring El Centro Regional Medical Center. Once the deal is final, this will create a unified health care district that includes Pioneers Medical Center in Brawley and is designed to strengthen care delivery and better serve residents in Imperial County.

In North County, these partnerships will bring the potential to expand services such as maternity care, oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, and other specialized treatments closer to where patients live. They also support modernization efforts and strengthen the foundation for future growth.

As our region continues to grow and evolve, partnerships will play a critical role in building a stronger, more connected health care system — one that ensures those in San Diego and Imperial counties can access the care, when and where they need it. We appreciate the dedication that made these collaborations possible and look forward to the positive impact they will have on their communities.
